Ask Away!

When shifting to a new position or entering a new job in which you are supervising or shepherding various people, your first 90 days are crucial.  In the book, Your First 90 Days, Michael Watkins gives pages of priceless advice for such a transition.

One of the essential gems that Watkins presents is the need to learn fast about the organization and its people.  To help with this process he gives the reader five key questions when going through the learning and listening process of the existing personnel:

  1. What are the biggest challenges the organization is facing (or will face) in the near future?
  2. Why is the organization facing (or going to face) these challenges?
  3. What are the most promising unexploited opportunities for growth?
  4. What would you need to happen for the organization to exploit the potential of these opportunities?
  5. If you were me, what would you focus on?

These five, key questions can not only show your spirit of humiliy, collaboration, and respect to your co-workers, but it will also position you for sharper effectivenss in a more immediate fashion.
