Effectiveness vs. Efficiency

In Bob Whitesel’s book, Inside the Organic Church, he provides a very interesting chart illustrating the tension within church of doing the right thing (effectiveness) and doing things right (efficiency).

On the left Whitesel lists observed characteristics of church with incipient institutionalization right out of an emphasis on doing this right (efficiently). On the right, he lists characteristics of churches using improvisation, fostered by an emphasis on doing the right things (effectiveness.)

Some questions to consider:

  • Do you agree with Whitesel’s delineation between churches that lean towards efficiency and those that lean towards effectiveness?
  • If you were to categorize yourself, where would you lean?
  • Where would your church community lean?
