Honest Prayers

On Christmas morning we have a very simple tradition.

Prior to the carnage that takes place with Christmas wrappings and bows, we take a moment to read the Christmas Story from the Gospel of Luke having each of our children role play a certain key character from our miniature Nativity scene.  (This year, we didn’t have an angel, so a Halo, Master Chief action figured sufficed…sniper and all.)

Following the reading of the passage and a reminder of the “reason for the season,” our 10-year-old son, Conner, volunteered to pray prior to the barbaric tearing that ensured.  His prayer follows:

Dear God.  Thank you for your son Jesus and for Christmas.  Please help us to be thankful for our gifts.  And God, even if there are gifts that we think are terrible, please help us to pretend that we like them.  Amen.
