Cisco’s Big 5

In an Harvard Business Review article (Sept 09) by the chief technology officer of Cisco‘s Emerging Technologies Group, Guido Jouret says that for each innovative idea that surfaces, they then ask five basic questions (pg. 44):

  1. Does it address a real pain point?
  2. Will it appeal to a big enough market?
  3. Is the timing right?
  4. If we pursue the idea, will we be good at it?
  5. Can we exploit the opportunity for the long term, or would this market commoditize so quickly that we wouldn’t be able to stay profitable?

A good reminder that within out-of-the-box thinking and a call for innovation, there still needs to be a filtering process of ensuring practicality and functionality.
